UMI was absolutely a unique dining experience that was all positive. In my opinion you are paying for the experience. Many... reviews will tell you the amount of food isn't worth the high prices, but myself (and the rest of our party of 4) all firmlydisagree. All four of us ordered the 11 course Omakase and every single course was incredible and was unique from the last(mostly all centered around sashimi). Sure, there were similarities (like the house umami-type sauce that came on multipledishes) but in my opinion the chef changes just the right amount parts that you do not feel like you are eating 11 courses ofthe same thing. We were all full after the meal and a few rounds of drinks. I don't think people understand that price doesn'tcorrelate with *amount* of food. I'd wager this is the freshest fish you can get in Pittsburgh. I disagree with anyone in thereviews who thinks the preparations/garnishes take away from or overpowers the focal points of the dishes. Mr. Shu definitelydoes justice to every pairing he serves. Service was great (Kirkland was our server, he was lovely) and the ambiance was verycool and was not crowded when we came (Thursday, end of night) which was nice. You can't get an experience like this anywhereelse in Pittsburgh, which is worth the extra penny or two. Read more

$580 for two peoplel for an extremely underwhelming experience. The so-called eleven course tasting menu consisted of different... white fish sashimi served with the more or less exact same ponzu sauce. The fish slices were cut wrong, leaving them too fatty, and one could not really taste the difference between any of them due to the same boring sauce being poured over them. The breakfrom the white fish sashimi was a fried shrimp that had almost no taste, and that one could have gotten at likely any fast foodrestaurant. A couple of the fish dishes as well as the Kobe beef were served with truffle and wasabi (again using the sametruffle sauce and wasabi for multiple of the dishes). The truffle was too dominant, and the tastes were just not balanced. Totop it off, both the Riesling and the $82 bottle of Sancerre were rather bland and so completely devoid of character that theycould not pair well with any of the food. Service was good, it was not her fault that the food was terrible. Read more

While I have a splendid array of words for the food; my five stars are specifically for our server of the evening, Cat. We... visited on the night before my partner and I’s wedding accompanied by my maid of honor. Our server went above and beyond tomake us feel like we were their only priority and their attention to detail was incredible. They’re truly a one of a kindemployee. Read more

Mr. Shu specializes in new-style sashimi: an assortment of small plates that masterfully highlight each ingredient to its... fullest. There’s no fair way to compare that to any other Japanese restaurant or sushi bar. Even after 25 years of dining atUmi, it’s always special every time we go—Mr. Shu is just that good. Read more

A year ago we tried their takeout set, which is okay, and this time we tried dine-in. Well, good service and great ambiance. You... should check out here if you value dinning experience. However, the food is mediocre except for dessert, so authentic Japanesefood lover should avoid coming here. Read more
